Switch to Forum Live View Puzzle Fighter II Xbox 360 suggestion

This may have been a long time coming, but I'm finally getting my thoughts out. Many years ago when Super Puzzle Fighter II was released on Sega Saturn, my friends and I loved the game, but ever since, I have always had a disposition with the game.  My problem with this game does not come from a personal preference or opinion, but an uncorrectable physical problem, in that I am colorblind, a problem that is far from small-rate in scale.

This "disability," as some call it, prevents me from playing Puzzle Fighter II well, as I cannot distinguish certain colors of blocks from one another.  In recent years, I have seen puzzle games being sensitive to this large part of the population and enabling those users to play their games by creating an option of placing symbols or some other kind of non-color related marking on the puzzle pieces to distinguish them from one another on the board.  I have most recently seen this in the Xbox Live Arcade game, Hexic HD, which brings me to my main issue.

This may not be so much feedback as it is a heartfelt suggestion to Capcom as they are planning to release Puzzle Fighter II for XBLA later this year.  I encourage Capcom to rectify this problem for the XBLA release of Puzzle Fighter, not just for my sake, but for the sake of all other die-hard Capcom fans that are affected by colorblindness.  I truly have no motivation to purchase the game, though it has one of my favorite puzzle game engines of all time, simply because I cannot play the game correctly, though myself and assuredly many other individuals would surely purchase this game if this simple problem was corrected.  I hope at least the US division of Capcom can take sensitivity to this issue and keep this in mind when the release time comes along, as you are losing my business and support, as well as many others, by not enabling us to play your games that we love.  I also largely bring this up since the Capcom Puzzle World collection was released for PSP recently and that game did not feature this change, so I figure the folks at Capcom had not thought of this aspect of the game yet.

I'm not trying to be highly critical or anything, but especially if they're improving the game in the ways they have already planned, a simple addition of a "colorblind mode" in the options or something could not possibly be a huge project, from my knowledge of video game programming, and it would make tons of people happier with your product.  Thanks for your time to anyone at Capcom who reads this and please write me back with a response if this issue is truly being brought into consideration.

If anyone else has anything to add here, feel free, the more support I can truly get may add to getting a change made.

Christian, I guess he's asking if it's possible to include a feature allowing it to show symbols instead of colored blocks. Can we, or is it too late in the development cycle?

Hey, thanks for the move, I wasn't exactly sure which section this belonged in.  The answer isn't quite as far as replacing them with symbols, but just displaying some kind of symbol over the colored block, since even just having some kind of overlay design over the color helps my eyes discern one from the next.  Try Hexic HD out with that mode on for a minute to get a glimpse of what I mean, as the blocks themselves aren't even altered, but a symbol is just assigned to each color and overlayed on it.  Thanks for the consideration, I hope you guys can still help.

And in addition to my comments, even if this isn't there at launch of the game because of devleopment times or anything else, could it be possible just to include it in a downloadable update through Xbox Live?  I know a number of XBLA games have gotten slight upgrades like that, so I think it should be possible, and as long as I had word the feature would be in the game at all, I would surely purchase it.

I'll ask the producer if there's an option to do some sort of overlay. It is rather far along in development but it never hurts to ask. :)

Thanks for trying to help, and keep me posted here on the progress if at all possible, and also please try to suggest if you can't get this feature in before release if it would be possible to add such a thing in a downloadable update.

Precisely what I was thinking. :)
The era of online downloadable games & game features allows developers to do such things. Hopefully Capcom takes this into consideration.

It does, but on consoles updates cost a lot of money believe it or not (in some cases more than it cost to create the update in the first place). It's not like PC in that respect where you just pump out a patch whenever you want and just float it to various outlets/your website. There's certification costs and delivery costs and they aren't insignificant within the scope of budgets typically used in XLA/PSN titles.

If it's going to happen, it's going to have to be there for release.

I spoke with the producer and he's now checking with the team and the schedule. No promises, but no one's told me "absolutely not" yet. :)

Cool. :)
I know I wasn't the one who started this topic, nor does the feature concern me, but thanks for bringing it to the team's attention, Sven. :)
